Certifications explained...
GOTS...
The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) is the world's leading standard for organic textile processing. It sets high environmental and social criteria throughout the entire supply chain, ensuring both human and environmental safety. Starting with organic farming, GOTS offers significant environmental and social benefits compared to conventional cotton production. From the fiber's origin to the final product, GOTS ensures traceability, providing consumers with confidence in the safety and quality of their purchases. GOTS prohibits harmful chemicals, including flame retardants, endocrine disruptors, heavy metals, PFCs, and formaldehyde, only allowing substances that meet rigorous health and environmental standards. GOTS also mandates environmental management plans, wastewater treatment for all wet processing facilities, and strict chemical limitations. Additionally, it includes social compliance criteria in line with International Labor Organization (ILO) standards. With GOTS, every production step is monitored to ensure safety for people and the planet.
Fairtrade...
Asian countries are the main global hub for textiles manufacturing, employing over 40 million people. The Fairtrade Textile Standard, introduced in 2016, aims to support workers throughout the entire production process, from seed cotton to finished garments. The Fairtrade Textile Standard mandates living wages for employees within six years of certification. It also ensures freedom of association, allowing workers to unionize and be trained on their rights. Certified factories must have a compliance committee of elected worker representatives to oversee standard implementation and share results transparently. Safety is a priority, with criteria for safe workplaces, protective equipment, and environmentally friendly chemical disposal. The standard also regulates working hours and employment contracts to combat excessive overtime. Additionally, Fairtrade promotes fair buying practices and long-term contracts between brands and factories to reduce production pressure.
